Very poor scam attempt

On Tuesday night, I put my bike up for sale on bikesales.com.au. Within an hour of it going live, I get an email from admdixx0110@gmail.com;

Hi mate is the BIKE still available for sale? if yes what is the condition and your lowest price?

Sweet. I was happy to have an early enquiry, so I replied that it was available and advised that they make an offer. I soon received an email from 'Adams Dixon'... Adams? Yes Adams;

ok no problem i will be paying you $9,500 with my PayPal account because it's
attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make
payment. If my mode of payment is accepted just send me your paypal
email address,(Paypal ID) or send me paypal payment request so i can
pay in right away. Make sure you get back to me so that i can make the
payment. I have a private courier agent that will handle the shipping
after payments has been made, so no shipping included.
And if you dont have a paypal account, you can easily go to
www.paypal.com.au and sign up. its very easy. i will call you later
I await your reply asap.

Due to the nature of my job and my location i will not be able to come
for inspection am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i
don't really think i need to come for a look, because i have gone
through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it so i will call
you when am chanced from work but as of now we can be chatting online
or sending emails.
And can you please confirm to me again that the item is very good
with no fault?

Was Adams trying to sell me a Paypal account? Immediately my ears pricked up and my spider sense started tingling. At this point I was unsure of what the scam was, so I held off passing over my Paypal address;

Hi Adam,

I do have a Paypal account, yes. I'm happy to accept Paypal.
The bike is in fantastic condition, seriously, like brand new.

If you'd like to call me, that'd be great - 0000 000 000.

In hindsight, giving him my mobile number was probably not the greatest thing to do. I soon received another response;

yes i can call you but i think its late now, so i will call you in the
morning but you can as well send me the paypal email address so that i
can make the payment for you tonight and call you in the morning after
payment

At this point, I had done a fair bit of research into Adams' potential scam and was well aware of his intentions. The idea is, that they 'pay' you an additional $1000 (advised only through an email) and you are required to forward on the extra $1000 to their 'shipping agent'. I emailed him my Paypal address.

A day went by and no Adams.

This morning, Thursday, I check my mail when I get in and notice a couple of emails from 'Paypal'. The first is hilarious. Subject is 'IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM PAYPAL' and the email is written in comic sans (maybe? my font-fu is not great,) the greatest part is that at the top of the email, Gmail has advised that 'Images are not displayed' and would I like to display images from 'moneyrelease@officeemail.net' - A security feature with several benefits. I have screen shot it to give you the full effect.

I had also received another email too, an 'Instant Payment Notification' from 'Paypal'. This email was interesting as it advised;

This is to inform you that you are required to send a sum of $900.00 AUD to the address below via western union money transfer and get back to us with the relevant information which you will be provided with after the money has been sent, you are requested to email us the Mtcn (Money Transfer Control Number) , sender's name and address used to make the transfer and the secret question and answer. As soon as we have received these information from you, we will credit a sum of $10,500.00 AUD to your PayPalaccount.Below is the address where the money is to be sent to using western union money transfer.

Agent's Info: David Williams,
7 Iship Yard Building,
Oval Road,
London,
SE1 5EL.
United Kingdom.

There's the money shot, right there. There was more about the requirements on me to make this payment to David Williams in the email, but that was the killer.

There was also a couple of emails from my mate Adams;

I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem
with the picking up, I got an email from my private courier agent..i
taught i included that in my previous email.he said he won't come and
pick up the item unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in
order to be able to schedule a pick up time ,and my private courier
head quarters is in the United Kingdom and all commission payments
made for pick up, from anywhere in the world is sent to their head
quarters in the U.k and the only form of payments they accept is
western union money transfer and i tried to pay online but i will need
a credit card which i dont use and there is no post office(there is
usually a western union section in most post offices) or any western
union agent offshore! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up
fees, i will include the $900 they charged to pick it up to the
payments i will send through paypal to you now so i will need you to
help me send the $900 to my courier agent through western union money
transfer. The western union money transfer can be made at a post
office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post
offices or online at www.westernunion.com. I will be making the
payments shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done...

And this one;

I just want to inform you that i have just completed the payment and i
hope you must have been notified in your email about the payment i
made through PayPal, you can check your e-mail for confirmation of
payment, I have just made the payment of $10,500.,i have decided to
add the amount of $1,000 which i paid through paypal, So please i will
like you to help me wire the sum of $900 to my agent via western union
so he can be able to come for the pick up and also paypal said they
won't release the funds until they get the western union information
from you due to the fact that i emailed them about the excess payment
i made.i will need you to send the $900 to my pick up agent
Headquarters where they normally confirm any commission payment to via
western union money transfer(this can be done from the post office,or
online at www.westernunion.com) as they usually have a western union
agent there) , i added extra $100 to cover the western union charges
which shouldn't be more that $60-75 but just to be sure i added $100,
Here is my pick up agent Headquarter info needed to get the money sent
through western union money transfer

David Williams,
7 Iship Yard Building,
Oval Road,
London,
SE1 5EL.
United Kingdom.

Please kindly email the necessary details to paypal :the mtcn which
you will be given at the western union after the $900 has been sent as
well as the sender's name and address used to send the money through
western union,so i can forward it to paypal or better still you can
email it to paypal directly.

When doing a WHOIS on the IP address from which the 'PayPal' emails were sent, I found that Adams lives in Mauritius and was sending through Yahoo servers. I sent an email to Adams;

Oh Adam, I was hoping you would make more of an attempt than this....
I knew from email number 1 that you were scamming me, but I was hoping
you would try to make it seem even slightly legitimate ... The email
from 'Paypal' is a terrible forgery, the 'agent' in London? Oh please
...

From: "service@paypal.com.au" <moneyrelease@officeemail.net>

officeemail.net ? Surely you can do better than that.

Not to mention using Yahoo servers.... Terrible. I expected more.

I was hoping I could send him something, so I could attempt to get him as well as the dudes from SomethingAwful.com got their scammer; The Powerbook Prank

The thing that concerns me about this is how many innocent people do get taken by these people.

Lessons to be learned;

  1. Dont trust anybody. Ever.
  2. Contact Paypal if you are ever unsure. Their support are hard to get hold of but take security very seriously and will advise you of any issues they can see.
  3. Dont send money to people in another country unless you are buying something from them.
  4. Dont trust anybody.
  5. Ever.

UPDATE (19/04/2010)

I received an email from 'PayPal' yesterday...

Dear christian@skylinesaustralia.com,

One of the benefits of using PayPal is that we make every effort to alert you to potentially problematic transactions. Our goal is to help you make sound business decisions.

A review of recent transactions indicates that you entered into an agreement with Adams Dixon by requesting money through PayPal, which shows that the PayPal account holder have authorized the payment you received.

We would like you to learn more about this transaction. It is important we know the status of the item bought concerning the information we requested from you, otherwise LEGAL ACTION may be taken against you since you have not replied to the confirmation of payment made to your account by her over time.

However the buyer has already contacted us in other to make report about your non response. We are ensuring to make PayPal a safer place, therefore we need to set confidence on our users. We use proprietary technology - and constantly innovation - to help ensure every transactions are safe.

We strongly advice you to send the money through western union money transfer and send the proof from WESTERN UNION by sending us the MTCN number and also a scanned copy of the paper receipt given to you at the post office or online to prove that the money has been sent in less than 24hours so that we can credit your account by releasing the PENDING payment or you face the consequences of LEGAL ACTION.

We have placed a temporary hold on the funds until the verification is complete.

Transaction Details
------------------------------ -----
Case Number          :    PP-304-718-247
Transaction ID         :   0TR19308DU070732T
Response deadline   :     18/04/2010
Sincerely,
PayPal Team
PayPal Email ID PP943

Again, the email was sent from 'moneyrelease@officeemail.net'. Things to note;

  1. Why, oh why, would Paypal be forcing me to use Western Union?
  2. "We strongly advice you to send the money" - Surely Paypal have english staff who can construct sentences better than this... ?
  3. Why would the response deadline be the same day that the email came through? Ooooh, seems Paypal doesn't get the 'timezone' thing (Sydney is +10, so ahead of almost all other countries.)
  4. "We have placed a temporary hold on the funds until the verification is complete." - Hold away, I sold the bike to somebody else.

Thank you for your post. I just got the emails from Maria Denisa (clearancerose2@gmail.com) who was buying an expensive Thomasville armoire that I posted on CraigsList. He/she played the same game with a transaction number from a PayPal that had a registered trademark symbol as the first character in the email address. I was so angry, I filed a complaint with the FBI!

I posted my auto for sale on a commonly used free classified ad site. got a response from a 989 area code number. guys email was johndonpeter******.
.asks me to email him my lowest price. first of all I know that you dont negotiate a price over the internet or the phone for that matter(red flag). So I responded stating matter of fact the actual asking price and that the vechicle cond. was VG.
So his response is that he will offer me 200 more ontop of asking price and that my asking price is okay by him but to ensure other potential buyers dont get it first hes adding the two hundred. He often sends to texts in a row and at this point he says 02/02 meaning feb 2nd? Feb 2 he would like to do the transaction okay? That is only a few days away. Next email is he is an offshore petroleum agent and he is very busy so he will have a (RED FLAG)private courier handle all the necessary documentation. Now the only reason I have played along this far is because he was quick to respond(red flag) and I wanted to sell it(who doesnt?) but at this point I decided to play a little game of my own. I asked him a very basic type question like; Are you a hockey fan? He responds ??? So I say you know the ***** -******** team ? He does not name the team or if he is a fan. He must know of this hockey team if he is soliciting me in my province right? WRONG! He responds and says YEP, because I already filled in the blanks for him.So I start doing some research on the area code petroleum engineering and what is private courier agent do? And I come across this web site with a story very similiar to mine...All of a suddent I get two texts at at time again saying....he wants a payment done and he needs to know if I have a (red flag) Pay Pal account? Hes out of luck already because I do not have one. By this time I am through reading the above guys story and have not responded to his texting and have deleted my number as a aprecaution from the classified ad that I had just posted. Have not heard from him for about 15 mins as I am busy typing this response on this site. Funny he wants my pay pay account that quickly not one to beat around the bush. Maybe I will send a text to him saying what is a petroleum engineer and what does he do? I doubt he will be able to answer that but ...

Got one here, davidscott40@ymail.com, just throwing the mail to the page so it pops up in google if anybody's curious enough to google the email address if they get one of these. thanks for posting. Got suspicious after he offered me more than the asking price for my car without ever seeing it and was incredibly eager to use paypal. You just saved my ass :)
Anyone who gets a mail from these guys should post the email addy and that way more people will catch them out just by googling a strange address which they get emails from looking to buy stuff.
  • Moiram72
Wow!  I can't believe how many people have been targeted.  I advertised my car in the Courier Mail and received a txt message with an email address but no number to reply to.  Never had that happen before.  I too, responded with all the appropriate information, but my gut was telling me that his story was a bit strange.  Was far too keen to use paypal, before I had even sent him the extra photo's he had asked for.  My guy is called Aaron Walker and apparently lives in Malaysia.  Again, the wording is identical to everyone who has commented here.  I said that he could use paypal so long as he was prepared to cover the costs of the commission.  I haven't heard from him since.  I reported him to the ACCC Scam Watch.  They confirmed the scam.  What a sad world we live in these days.....
  • guest
thank you for sharing this. Same thing happened to me today I put up my car for sale and I actually got two of the scumbags sending me the exact same emails. At first I was so happy that someone is actually willing to pay the price I'm asking for. Then I thought hold on a minute- so this person wants to buy a car without looking at it what so ever and just send me the money just like that. Hmm it has to be some kind of scam. Lol I haven't replied to the assholes. I actually typed "private courier agent" on google and came to your page.
so once again thanks for sharing.
  • Bowens22c
I was scammed before out of $200 and I received 2 emails form two different people today similar to yours. I knew it was a scam. something seemed wrong and the way that they speak is a key to them being a scammer. I knew paypal would not talk that way
  • Saxondog13
My Patron is Eric Summers,he's serving at sea in the US Navy. Same old bull except today I get a threat from the FBI instructing me to pay the fee of I'm in big legal trouble. But what really burns me is PayPal. I've forwarded 5 messages, and followed their procedure.

So why is paypal so silent? This is a scam sure but like you what about the people who lose money through this deceit?

So being the kind person I google earthed the address and guess what a old building, about two blocks from a post office,This sucks, and these people should be stopped, unplugged.

Such mails are doing rounds since last couple of years and their probable source is from African countries (at least what the IP address shows according to reports). SPAM is unwanted and should not be tolerated at all.
Perhaps time for some concrete action by the Internet service providers to filter out such silly mails and people out there to fleece money from unsuspecting people...
  • rosiem86
Thank you so much for posting this. I was almost scammed, I had actually already transfered the money via Western Union and came home and checked with Paypal only to discover I had been scammed. Called Western Union straight away and money had not been collected yet so I can get it back. I'm not very internet savy, only use it every now and then and am the perfect unsuspecting target for people like John Derenge.I feel like an idiot but at least I can get the money back. Big Lesson Learnt.
  • Cheesburger110
i had the exact same thing with johnsge006@gmail.com. sounds like they use a few email addresses. straight from the start receiving a text i could not reply to was strange. a few emails were sent. then received one in a totally different format, saying he is a marine engineer... exactly the same as this story but i cut off connections straight after the email.. has anyone reported it?
  • Chrystal Platt
hey, this is happening to me as well , i am trying to sell my grad dress and he claiming to be mark smith and yes he brought my mother in it as well, but we called QPS when we found out through paypal it was a scam so now QPS is dealing with it and also they are sending cheques over thru western union also as you do the mystery shopper job and ask you to send the cheques back and they get like $15000 in there money when the cheques are fake.
  • SweetPea
Thanks ever so much for listing such great detail on this scam. I am trying to sell my fiat through a local Canberra website called allclassifieds and received the 'marine engineer' email after a short first enquiry from one John Derenge that seemed quite legitimate (because it referenced in a non-copy and paste way what I was selling). I said they could come and look at it after which point I received the "I'm married to the sea" response. He said he was buying it for his son as a surprise gift, would pay via paypal and would send an agent to pick it up. He also said that if I didn't have a paypal account it would only take 3 minutes to set one up.

I won't get to the point of even receiving the fake paypal emails because you've posted this information here. I really appreciate it. Right now I'm very thankful for my healthy sense of cynicism and your blog!!!
  • gle4
thanks loads for putting this up mate, they almost had my dad fooled cause the poor fella isnt net savvy. it sounded dodgy when he read it over the phone, but this email was just blatantly obvious. i googled this email and got your result. its pretty much the same.

can someone tell me: do i string it out and waste their time or do i tell them the game is up now? :)

"Thanks so much for your warm reply. No problem i will be paying you with my PayPal account because it's attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make payment . If my mode of payment is accepted just send me your paypal email address,(Paypal ID) so i can pay in right away. Make sure you get back to me so that i can make the payment. I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been made, so no shipping included. And if you dont have a paypal account, you can easily go to www.paypal.com.au and sign up. its very easy. I await your reply asap

NOTE:I have already contact a shipping company that will handle the pick up."
  • Oneadi66

I just received an email through my gmail, his name is John Derenge and he claims to be on a ship working as a marine engineer. He wants my Paypal email address. Lol, I knew it was a scam right away from car shopping on ebay at one time. Got tons of scam attempts. FYI when then give a lot of information for no reason its a scam. Anyway I'm chatting with him now. I'm thinking about calling the attorney general's office right now to bust this low life. I'm gonna contact paypal for sure. Thanks for the information.
  • Casa Emporio
OMG! I got one too from a John S. Derenge with an offer on an item listed on ebay. I knew something was fishy when he was sending me such lengthy emails detailing every action that I am supposed to take.. hilarious. All i did was google his name and *poof*.. i find all his emails in this post matching word by word..

This roach claims to be a marine officer and wants me to send $200 to the US for his shipping agent.. lol .. Long way to go to pick up something from Australia..

OMG! I have just gone through the Very same thing with a listing on Crag's list!!! the only thing I turned over to them, my email address on my Pal Pay account. Thats it. Same situation as your but he was on a secret mission over seas! lol More like in the Underground world of Dirt. As soon as he said, well I just got an email that you have to send the shipper your own money before the pending money shows in your pay pal account! Whaaaat!!?? RED FLAG!! I dont even have my own money to transfer, otherwise I wouldn't be selling the chairs I sit on!! Posted the chairs for sale & wouldn't you know wit in 10 minutes those stinkin sharks were on me!!! I too sent him a nice little reply, that I was onto him & basically to Stick where the sun doesn't shine!!

Its unfortunate for the next buyer that has sent me an email, he sounds a little more legit but still wants to send me a cashiers ck. I replied with a no thanks.

Thanks so much for the post
  • arg87
I would just like to say a big THANKYOU for sharing this with everyone!! My workmate was just about to transfer the money across to Western Union when I told him to stop!! I googled $900 scam and up you came!! The emails he was sending was EXACTLY the same as you receievd pretty much WORD FOR WORD! HA what a loser! You have saved my workmate soooooo much trouble and we are really grateful for that! I hope these SCUMBAGS get caught out!!! Once again thanks heaps!

PS -- His name was DAVID from United Kingdom SE8.
  • Uan87
Thanks for taking the time to write this very informative and HILLARIOUS account of your business with these arseholes! I copied and pasted the email i received from these con artists and it came out almost word for word the same was yours. Like you, i also suspected a con but wasn't sure what it was. Fortunately i have now sent the bastards packing with a few choice words, but feel sorry for those who are fooled by such scams.

    Thanks again!
  • Jonobetts
Someone did the same thing for me. They wanted to buy one of my paintings and contacted me through folksy.com

"I was just about to make the payments when i had this little problem with the picking up of the item , I am currently on sea and i am buying the item for my friend as i explained earlier on and i tried to book pick up with my pick up agent, but they asked me to pay first before they can make the booking, and they only accept western union money transfer for payments and they don't accept PayPal or bank transfer and I tried to send the money online but i couldn't and I am on sea and there is no way i can find a western union agent to make the transfer to my pick up agent, so i wanted to ask if it was ok for me to include my pick up agent's fees in the payments I am about to send through PayPal, my pick up agent charged €100 plus insurance and all 'o that, pls can i include their money in the payments I want to send then after i have made the payments you will help me forward the €100 to my pick up agent

through western union money transfer, this I would have done myself and not bother you but the for the fact that I am currently on sea, so after I have made the payments you will help me send €100 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, I just wanted to seek your consent before going ahead with the payments,I will more than appreciate if you mail me back, and I will be making the payments shortly.

PS:the shipping company's Head quarters and any pick up fees to be paid is sent to their head quarters by the payee, so the money for pick up will be sent to their head quarters through western union money transfer(this can be done from any post office) at western union.com or money grams "

Before I received this email I actually got excited thinking I'd sold a painting! As soon as this arrived I knew it was a scam!!

    Bastards!!
  • Jonobetts
By the way his email was charles_cole02@yahoo.com

His name is supposed to be Charles Coleman!
  • Neiltr73
Classic! I just had the same thing happen to me in the past few days. I actually got an email claiming to be from the FBI stating i was bound to a contract with the buyer and seller thru paypal but that I needed to send money thru western union and to give him the senders name and control number immediately. However this is the name he used with me.

    Peter Johnson,
    88, Disraeli Road, Putney,
    London,
    SW15 2DY,
    United Kingdom

When I searched his info I was led to this page which cracked me up. I would love to find the guy behind all these pathetic scams and thump him in the sack! The sad thing is how many people are not savvy enough to fall for this and do send this idiot the money he requested. Makes me wonder why he can't put all this time and energy into getting a real job! What a douche! I also reported him to google, mail2consultant, FBI, and western union as well as paypal. I normally get too lazy to waste my time but this time just rubbed me wrong! Thanks for posting Christian!

Here is the email that he sent claiming to be from the FBI. It even had the logo and everything which to me is making this fraud far more serious than he realizes. I like how he has some New York Agents name and signature but looks like a UK number at the bottom.

    Dear Paypal Customer,

It is important we know the status of the money paid through PayPal by Morris Wood. You are requested to give us the Mtcn (Money Transfer Control Number) and the sender's name and address used to make the transfer after which we will then credited we will fund the money into your account or face the consequences of LEGAL ACTION.

You were scammed by a Piano?

Thats absurd, how did it write the email?
  • Gily77
Thanx for the post guys, I knew it was a scam when 2 emails were nearly identical in words. Maybe I should reply back saying that I will thank them for their interest in my bike by deposting $1000 in their paypal account just because I'm gullible.

  • Brian
wow! exact same thing happened to me, from a

Mark Smith, a so called employer of WHO (World Health Organization)

Sad thing is i trusted him until he made an offer, and before i accepted it he had already "deposited the funds into pay-pal". Then i was suspecting something, as this was almost too good to be true. I quickly googled this and thanks to Larry below, the link came up straight away, Cheers larry

Same process of emails, and Pay-pal mail coming into my junk folder, where it clearly normally comes into my inbox.

    Thanks for the post
  • Larry
    I received a similar scam from a

    Peter Johnson,
    88, Disraeli Road, Putney,
    London,
    SW15 2DY,
    United Kingdom

Trying to buy a truck in the US. THis is obviously a scam! If you look at the status of you paypal account you will not see any money in the account! THe name of the account was mark smith!! very similar to others! keep up the good fight.
  • Tylercito
haha, wow! this seems eerily familiar to what I am going through tonight... no funds credited to my paypal account... which happens to be $1000 more for shipment costs for a company based in the UK... hahaha
  • James
Even funnier, the London postcode listed is actually a sports management agency.

Here in Canada we are encouraged to send any such fraudulent e-mails to the RCMP through their "Phone Busters" site. You should see if your country has a similar site.
Anyone living in Canada receiving any such scams should report it here: http://www.phonebusters.com/

Hi Christian, the same happened to us as well, two Belgians travelling through Australia and trying to sell our car in Perth... Literally the same words - we were not really trusting them from the beginning, but we googled and googled until we found your story - interesting! These guys (ours was called Towel (Towel!!!???) Smith) are everywhere, damn. And we still haven't sold our car. Looking for a Toyota Hiace Hi Top from 1999? ;-)
  • plmt
Thanks for the warning I just had an idiot try to by my bike off me exactley the same way.
His emails were word for word of what you received.
I often wonder about anyone wanting to buy a bike without viewing it or having someone they know to look at it on their behalf if they can't get there themselves.
  • You're welcome. I want people to know that the likely hood of attempted scams is increasing every day and while these guys are not the sharpest tools in the shed, I can see how easy it would be for somebody to fall for it.
  • Timberlinebucks
here is a similar email. I dang near bought into this scumb bag. The kicker is he sends you a phony paypal confirmation. always log into your orignal pay pal account to check for the funds.

"I was just about to pay when i had this problem with the pick up, my pick up
agent says i will need to pay for the pick up before they can schedule a
pick up time, they charged me $900 for pick up and delivery, and
paymentsor pick up made through them is made to their corporate
international headquarters which is in the united kingdom and the
payments is made through western union money transfer, i will add the $1,000 to the money i will send through paypal as soon as i have made the payments, i will email you and let you know and please i will need you to help me send the money to my pick up
agent Hq in the UK through western union money transfer, this can be done
from any post office ,there is always western union money transfer section
in most post offices(you can do it online as well at www.westernunion.com
)...,i would have done it myself but we cant bring some of our personal effects
along, i am a little incapacitated.....I will appreciate your help here" Here is the adress he requested the western union to be sent to. Peter Johnson,
    88, Disraeli Road, Putney,
    London,
    SW15 2DY,
    United Kingdom.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for the warning I just had John Derenge send me a phone message trying to buy my products from ebay again there was no return number just an email address. I replied via email asking him to come view the products and he can make an offer. In the same story I recieved an email stating that due to his nature of work he couldnt come out but would be more than happy to buy the product with out seeing it, thats when alarm bells started ringing, so I did some research and this post came up. Thanks guys for realy opening up my eyes to this scum bag. I replied back simply telling him to go get ^#%@* !! and that I was on to your scam you low life ^#@% get a real job if you need money!!
