Base Jumpers. In Sydney?

I think this is too cool. Two base jumpers jumped off a tower in Sydney (we dont have the highest towers) only to land next to some cops who arrest them and the BASE association president says that they were unlucky to land next to police. What a rush, I dont think I'd have the balls to do it. Both of the men are younger than me too.

I love it.

At what temperature would you consider swimming in nuclear cooling water?

I wonder how hot these Taiwanese people are to make them think that the water being drained from the Nuclear power plant after being used for cooling, is safe to swim in?

"I haven't evaluated the safety here. That's something scholars
and experts should research more,"

This is a classic quote. I love it. People are so sure that others will look after them.

This is the kind of thing movies are made of

I have just read an article on smh that states that a canal that runs through some of our cities' suburbs is the most contaminated in the southern hemisphere! That is just crazy, the canal has been pumped full of industrial waste for so long that the governement has warned people to not touch it! Other agencies like the Environment Protection Agency warn that we also cannot disturb it as the toxic sediments on the bottom of the canal are far more toxic than those at the surface.

Scary Stuff.

The torch through Canberra.

As I am writing this, the Olympic torch is being run around Canberra by various people who are being protected and flanked by police and police vehicles. People have come from everywhere to protest the torch, either for or against, China.

One of my Heroes, Bob Brown, had a sky writer write 'Free Tibet' across the sky during the run.

More info here.

And, according to this article, this might be the last time the torch comes to Australia. I dont believe that for a moment and it is just a scare tactic to get people to calm down. Why should they calm down? Since when has voicing your opinions been something to be threatened about? (ok, since, like, forever...).

Now a nice and easy way to reduce your PC’s power consumption

I was reading LifeHacker (as I always do). And I found a great post on going green with your pc. From that post, I found localcooling which is an application and community reducing their pc's consumption in a collaborative effort to reduce carbon emissions. What a great idea. I signed up and am now saving 70 watts of power from my work machine alone. Nice work Uniblue.

Nice Innocent Fun Bubbles? WRONG!!

So, while buying little toys and lollies to pack a 4 year olds 'pass the parcel' with, my wife saw a bottle of 'Fun Bubbles' and as our 1 year old girl loves bubbles, she bought it.

Well, today I opened it to blow some bubbles around to try to keep the rapidly-tiring toddler from imploding. And then I noticed the ingredients printed in big letters on the side of the bottle.

What the hell is with that? I was scared that if the bubbles popped on the floor, they would burn through to the apartment below. What is this stuff? Blood from an alien?

Needless to say, we wont be using 'Fun Bubbles' any time soon.

Reef Octopus CR-70 / Calfusion 500 Setup

So I purchased a new calcium reactor for my tank the other day. Its about time too as the kalkwasser dosing was not cutting the cheese anymore. I bought a small CR70 Reef Octopus (Reef Octopus also sell an extension chamber which I am planning on getting soon to increase its capacity).

For anybody who has purchased a reef octopus product before you know that the 'documentation' provided with the product is somewhat lacking. For this reason, I decided to do a small 'how to' for setting up the Reef Octopus CR-70 / Calfusion 500 calcium reactor.

With some help from a few at MASA. I got all the info I needed on setting it up correctly.

So, here is the picture of my ca reactor setup and running;

The key is as follows;

  1. Water Outlet - This goes back to my sump. See the next picture for this.
  2. Recirculation Outlet - This goes to the recirculation Inlet.
  3. co2 injection - This is co2 from my pH controller and co2 bottle. The bubble rate is approximately 10 bubbles per minute keeping the pH inside the reactor to about 6.7
  4. Water Inlet - This is the water pickup from my sump.
  5. Recirculation Inlet - This is the inlet from the recirculation outlet

Here is a picture of the water inlet and outlet in my sump;

The key is;

  1. Water Outlet - This is adjusted to approximately 40 drips per minute.
  2. Water Inlet - this is the pickup for the ca reactor. The beautiful thing about the Reef Octopus reactors is that that do not require a dosing pump.

The reactor increased my Ca in my tank from about 360ppm to ~450ppm. Its only been in there a few days though, so I am still tuning and making sure its ok.

I hope that helps anyone else who purchases one of these.

Japanese Whaling Quota damage

In my Greenpeace newsletter that arrived this morning, I noticed the following paragraph;

Whales: The Japanese whaling fleet returned to port short of their quota by nearly
half, and blamed environmentalists for disrupting the hunt. We should all
be proud of the role we played in saving 439 whales when our ship the
Esperanza pursued the Nisshin Maru for 15 days across 4,300 miles of the
Antarctic whale sanctuary, shutting down the whole whaling operation for the
entirety of the epic chase.

Thats brilliant. An extra 500 whales for our oceans for another 9 months or so. :) Thanks Greenpeace, Sea Shephard and anyone else involved in this!
